Five Final Fantasy Games That Deserve the 'Crisis Core' Prequel Treatment

More Laguna lore, please!

The Final Fantasy franchise has had a long, distinguished history, with dozens of games released over the course of 35 years. Most of the entries are expansive enough that they warrant their own sequels, prequels, and spin-offs.

The Compilation of Final Fantasy VII is a good example of this, with the groundbreaking seventh entry having multiple iterations, including a remake of its PlayStation Portable prequel, Crisis Core Reunion, that released in late 2022.

Even the very first Final Fantasy is not immune to this phenomenon as 2022 also saw the release of Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins, which retells the events of the original game albeit with a modern twist.

So with so many prequels released, here are five more mainline Final Fantasy games that should get their own someday.

Final Fantasy V

On a macro level, Final Fantasy V’s story of four Warriors of Light and the goal of restoring four elemental crystals were also explored in the first and third entries. But what makes Final Fantasy V different from its predecessors is the introduction of the Warriors of Dawn.

The precursors to the four heroes of Final Fantasy V, these Warriors of Dawn had their own adventures against the primary antagonist Exdeath. Seeing the adventures of Galuf and his band of heroes on their quest for peace would be a sight to behold for longtime fans.

Final Fantasy VIII

Technically, with Final Fantasy VIII’s use of concurrent storylines, players did get to play through the events of the past through the eyes of protagonist Squall Leonhart’s father, Laguna Loire. These snippets came sporadically throughout the game before the party finally meets Laguna in the present day.

While they do serve to provide context to a lot of the game’s ongoing storyline, it would be great to have a game that fleshes out the life of Laguna Loire even further, right until the start of Final Fantasy VIII.

Final Fantasy X

Just like Final Fantasy VIII, players of Final Fantasy X do get sporadic looks at the adventures of Yuna’s father Braska, Tidus’ father Jecht, and Auron as they all went on the same pilgrimage that Yuna and friends went through in Final Fantasy X.

What would be great is to have fans experience this journey firsthand, like how Jecht found himself in a strange world, how Auron became the guardian we know and love in Final Fantasy X, and how much havoc the force of nature Sin wreaked throughout history.

Final Fantasy XII

The twelfth entry of Final Fantasy depicted a ruthless empire invading the land of Ivalice, with a ragtag team of heroes rising up to defeat this menace. It is a straightforward tale all things considered, but with how the Ivalice setting is tied to games in the Final Fantasy Tactics sub-series, there’s so much more to explore in its history.

Final Fantasy XII is the first game within the wider Ivalice series of games, so it would be great to experience the story of Dynast-King Raithwall, the ancient king who actually united the lands to create the Ivalice we know today.

Final Fantasy XIV

After the release of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, the original version of the MMORPG is effectively non-existent. As flawed as it was, it would still be great to keep this initial version alive somehow.

Perhaps a single-player prequel that sets up the events of A Realm Reborn would be ideal, one that can serve as a primer to this much-beloved entry for those who aren’t looking to dive into the whole subscription-based service.
